DANIEL S KEHDE
Dan Kehde is a playwright-director who lives in Charleston, WV, with his wife, Penny, five cats and a dog. His life consists of writing every morning, rehearsing most evenings and producing shows on a regular basis with the Contemporary Youth Arts Company which he helped found five years ago with several teenagers, his wife and his collaborating composer, Mark Scarpelli. A writer his entire life, Dan divides his creative focus between his plays and librettos and his determination to give teenagers in the Charleston area extra curricular access to the performing arts.
"Being able to give kids a chance to work on original material," he says, " is something they're not going to get in most other venues. It's really exciting to share the creative process, to teach them how to create roles that have never been done before and to have them share in the excitement of actually putting something together that has never been seen."
"Gone Tomorrow..." is an adaptation of a story written by Penny Kehde to help teenagers grasp the reality of HIV-AIDS in their lives. It was inspired by the death of a friend from the disease in 1992..
Another play by Dan, "The Siege of Room 304," offers a compelling look at how guns and violence affect a classroom of teens. Look for future releases from this gifted playwright including "Hector's Warehouse and Other Ghost Stories," not an "issue" play but one guaranteed to raise some goose bumps.
