Ernie is a lonely old fisherman, without much joy in his life, until he meets an unlikely friend: a mermaid named Breeze. She has just escaped from the cruel underwater kingdom of the idiotic Emperor Tropico and hopes to enjoy her newly found freedom. But just hanging around in Ernie's lagoon isn't enough for her. When she spies Rico, the local heart-breaker, practicing for an upcoming dance competition, Breeze decides to become human and pursue her dream of becoming a dancer. However, there are many obstacles in her way. For one, she must make a deal with the magical and cruel-hearted Swamp Hag. But along her journey, Breeze is helped by friendly dolphins, dim-witted hermit crabs, and of course, her good friend Ernie. With a humorous assortment of delightful characters, "Mermaid in Miami" is certain to make a big splash with audiences.

Behind The Scenes

PLAYWRIGHT WADE BRADFORD

TALKS ABOUT "MERMAID IN MIAMI"

Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS PLAY?

A: I was listening to Latin jazz and salsa music while reading tales from Hans Christian Andersen one day. For some reason, I liked the idea of combining the emotional energy of these two very different art forms.

Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PART OR LINE IN THE PLAY? WHY?

A: I'm pleased with the Ernie and Breeze scenes. They form a very special bond. They are sort of friends, but there's also a parent/child type relationship connection as well.

Q: WHERE DO THE CHARACTERS COME FROM? ARE THEY BASED ON PEOPLE YOU KNOW?

A: You know ... I've tried to answer this question several times, but nothing comes out right. The characters just sort of happen as I type. I'm not really sure where they come from.

Q: WHAT DID YOU TRY TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS PLAY?

A: I wanted to make a show that offers a really terrific time for both the cast and the audience. I wanted to do create something with a lot of energy and comedy, but ultimately a show that has a lot of heart and even a little bit to think about.

Q: ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO SAY?

A: I'd just like to thank all of the drama teachers and directors out there (as well as all the young actors) who have responded so positively to my shows. Knowing that these plays are being performed across the country means the world to me. Thanks, everybody!
